A small plane crashed on Sunday into a bakery in a crowded area of Colombia's capital Bogota, killing at least four people and injuring several others, authorities said.

The early morning Beechcraft 60 crash rocked the Engativa neighbourhood, not far from El Dorado international airport.

The incident occurred just after the plane had taken off from a nearby airfield, AFP reported.

El Tiempo, a Colombian newspaper, reported that five people were killed.

The newspaper reported that at least one person was killed on the ground when the plane landed on top of the bakery.

The crash also damaged three nearby buildings.

The plane, which was engaged in aerial photography work, went off radar screens while it was flying between the village of Bitaco and the town of La Cumbre, Fox News reported.

All three passengers in the aircraft and the pilot were killed, said a statement from the mayor's office.

"So far there have been seven people injured who are being treated in hospital," the statement added.

Firefighters closed off the area as they searched for other victims.
