Lost NZ woman survives by drinking her own breast milk
A New Zealand woman who got lost in the wilderness said she survived by drinking her own breast milk.
Mrs Susan O’Brien was taking part in a gruelling 20km run in a forest south of Wellington on Sunday (May 10) when she took a wrong turn and became disorientated.
The 29-year-old personal fitness trainer said she was convinced she was going to die and that she spent her time praying and thinking of her family.
It was a cold, wet, windy night and she was dressed in only light running gear.
Mrs O’Brien, who has a two-year-old son and eight-month-old daughter, said she scooped out a hole to keep warm and fed herself with breast milk.
"I just kept chucking dirt on top of me and every time I heard something I'd just scream 'help'," she told reporters.
"One thing that helped me, I’m breastfeeding my baby, so I had a bit of my milk because I thought that would help me keep going for energy."
Mrs O’Brien's brother, Mr Lester Khoo, and the organisers of the run put up posts on Facebook appealing to other runners for information on her.
A helicopter fitted with heat-detecting sensors found her late Monday (May 11) morning. By then, she had been missing for 24 hours.
Mrs O’Brien had an emotional reunion with husband Daniel and her two children before she was taken to hospital for a check-up.
