Planned Parenthood investigated over claims that it sells aborted babies' body parts

Family planning provider Planned Parenthood is being investigated by US Congress after an anti-abortion group Center for Medical Progress released a 'sting' video (see below) purportedly documenting the selling of aborted babies' organs for profit, according to US media.

In the video, Center for Medical Progress had two paid actors pose as staff from a human biologics company interested in purchasing body parts. They dine opposite Dr Deborah Nucatola, the senior director of medical services at Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), who details how normal abortion procedures can be adjusted in order to preserve the organs needed.

"We've been very good at getting heart, lung, liver, because we know that, so I'm not gonna crush that part, I'm gonna basically crush below, I'm gonna crush above, and I'm gonna see if I can get it all intact," Dr Nucatola is heard saying in the video.

House Speaker John Boehner called for an investigation into Planned Parenthood on Wednesday (July 15), reported The Huffington Post.

"When an organisation monetises an unborn child -- and with the cavalier attitude portrayed in this horrific video -- we must all act," Mr Boehner is reported to have said in a statement.

"As a start, I have asked our relevant committees to look into the matter. I am also calling on President Obama and Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell to denounce, and stop, these gruesome practices."

PPFA released a statement in the same day condemning what it called the video's false accusations.

"At several of our health centers, we help patients who want to donate tissue for scientific research, and we do this just like every other high-quality health care provider does -- with full, appropriate consent from patients and under the highest ethical and legal standards," PPFA spokesman Eric Ferrerot wrote. "There is no financial benefit for the tissue donation for either the patient of for Planned Parenthood."

PPFA is the American equivalent of the Singapore Planned Parenthood Association, and both are affiliates of the International Planned Parenthood Federation.
