Cleaner showered with gifts after being mocked online

This article is more than 12 months old

A cleaner in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, has been showered with gifts from strangers after a photo mocking him for gazing into a jewellery shop's window went viral.

According to the Daily Mail, an Instagram user had shared the photo of Mr Nazer al-Islam Abdul Karim, 65, a Bangladeshi, with the caption: "This man deserves to only look at rubbish."

Twitter user Abdullah Al-Qahtani, 38, took a screenshot and set out to find the cleaner with a tweet on Sunday.

After over 6,500 retweets, users figured out his location from the shop window's reflection in the photo in just a day.

Mr Nazer, who earns 700 Saudi Riyal (S$267.11) monthly, told CNN: "I was just doing my job as a cleaner in the municipality and found myself in front of the gold shop. I am very happy about the gifts and very thankful."

Money is still being sent to him, together with bags of rice and honey, return tickets to his homeland, and two mobile phones.
