At least 42 people were injured on Friday night after a railing collapsed at a Snoop Dogg concert in New Jersey, police said.

The rap superstar was performing with fellow hip-hop artist Wiz Khalifa in the north-eastern US state when the metal railing caved under the weight of attendees leaning against it.

Footage uploaded to social media shows concert-goers tumbling atop one other and towards the foot of the stage.

Concert-goer Katie Colbridge told NBC News that the crowd was moving to get a better view when the "whole fence collapsed".

"People started piling on each other and people just started running," she said.

"All you see were tears going down their faces. You could see friends holding onto each other... like making sure that all their people were there."

She said she been one section away and was not injured.

Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa were ushered off the stage as security moved in to help the fans.

Local police spokesperson Dan Keashen said that most of the injuries were broken bones and bruises.

One person, who was taken to a trauma centre with a serious upper body injury, was discharged on Saturday morning.

A Camden city spokesman told AFP that the venue has no history of code violations or building maintenance issues.

The concert ended soon after the incident. The next concert featuring Salt N Pepa will go on as scheduled, Mr Keashen said.
