Kolkata woman says friends attacked her

A woman in Kolkata jumped from the second storey of a three-storey building, allegedly to escape being raped.

The woman, who was not named, was seriously injured.

She has been admitted to the Howrah General Hospital, reported the Times of India.

Recounting the incident, the 20-year-old said she had gone out for drinks with a few friends on Sunday evening.

She claimed that the drink her friends gave her was laced with drugs.

She said her male friends then tried to gang-rape her.

She added that she felt drowsy but in a desperate attempt to escape her rapists, she ran to a balcony on the second storey and jumped.

A mound of sand on the ground reportedly saved her life.

Some locals who saw the woman jump took her to the hospital.

Others managed to catch the three attackers and handed them over to the police, Hindi-language news channel NDTV India reported.

The trio have been arrested and accused of rape.

According to doctors, the woman, who is from the town of Liluah in Howrah district, escaped getting raped.

But police have filed a sexual harassment case against her three friends.

The men appeared in the Howrah court yesterday.

Police told BBC Hindi that one of the men arrested was the woman's boyfriend.
