Sarawak mother found hanging in toilet

The house in Kota Samarahan, Sarawak, where a woman and her two sons lived, was unusually quiet.

Suspecting something was amiss, the neighbours alerted the police, who sent a team to check on the occupants, the New Straits Times reported.

When the officers entered the house, they stumbled upon a grisly find.

The woman, 37, was found hanging inside the toilet while her two sons were lying on the floor. One of them, a four-year-old, was still alive.

Police believe the mother had poisoned her children and then committed suicide.

Kota Samarahan district police chief Deputy Superintendent Lee Chong Chern said the four-year-old was still breathing when policemen arrived at the scene.

But he later died at the Sarawak General Hospital's (SGH) Heart Centre.

The older boy, aged seven, was already dead when the police arrived at the house.

DSP Lee said his men recovered a bottle of bleach without its cap, next to the bodies of the children.

He said: "Our checks on the boys when we arrived showed that the area around their mouths had darkened, suggesting poisoning.

"We believe the woman had poisoned her children before committing suicide as no element of foul play was found at the premises."

All the bodies were sent to the SGH's forensic department in Kuching for a post-mortem.

Police are in the midst of gathering information from family members and friends to ascertain the motive behind the tragedy.
