Singaporeans' old furniture given new lease of life in Kelantan
Don't be surprised if you see an old table of yours restored to its former glory and occupying a spot in someone's house in Kelantan.
Second-hand furniture shop owners in the Malaysian state are buying or collecting used furniture in Singapore and giving them a new lease of life, reported New Straits Times.
The articles of furniture are transported back to Kelantan, where they are repaired or refurbished before being resold at low prices.
In Kota Baru city alone, there are close to a dozen shops selling used furniture from Singapore, the Malaysian newspaper reported.
Second-hand furniture shop owner Roslan Harun told New Straits Times that his prices ranged from RM100 (S$34) to RM1,000.
"I started my business in 2007 after realising second-hand furniture from Singapore was a hit in Kelantan due to its quality and wood type," the 52-year-old man was quoted as saying.
He and his cousin take turns to make the weekly trip to Singapore to select furniture. The items are transported back in Mr Roslan's lorry.
"Normally, the furniture needs a little repair, but it is in good condition," he said.
