A Chinese woman allegedly stole a diamond worth 10 million baht (S$392,000) and then swallowed it.

Jiang Xulian, 30, and a Chinese man, Hae Ying, were detained at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport on Thursday night on suspicion of stealing the diamond.

Jiang allegedly stole the six-carat diamond from a jewellery fair held in Nonthaburi, the Bangkok Post reported.

The couple initially denied the accusation, claiming that they were just tourists and were about to return home.

But they were later asked to undergo an X-ray scan which found the stolen diamond in the woman's large intestine.

The woman was given laxatives, and the couple are being held in police custody for further investigation.

An exhibitor at the Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair told the police that a couple who appeared to be Chinese nationals had switched a fake diamond for the genuine six-karat stone on the first day of the fair.

CCTV footage showed the two Chinese at the booth.

Immigration police later detained the couple whose appearances matched the video images. They initially kept denying the accusation, but later confessed.
