Miley Cyrus' homeless VMA date sentenced to six months' jail
The homeless young man who accepted Miley Cyrus' MTV Video Music Award has been sentenced to six months in jail for violating his probation in Oregon.
Jesse Helt, 22, found himself in the spotlight after a moving speech on youth homelessness which helped raise more than US$200,000 (S$254,000) in just one day for a shelter which Cyrus supports.
Cyrus had used the publicity stunt to good effect in marked contrast to her twerking the year before.
Soon after, the media highlighted his past arrests in Oregon and it was found that he was violating the terms of his probation after he was arrested in 2010 for criminal mischief.
He moved to Los Angeles the next year and so failed to meet with his probation office or complete his mandatory community service.
On Tuesday, Helt asked the judge for leniency.
He said that he would "like to be viewed as a good person, not as a nuisance to society".
It was reported that Helt turned himself in August after the media reports brought his past to light.
Cyrus tweeted then:
At publication time, she had not responded to the sentence.
