Golf quartet raring to go in team event
He returned home from the United States last Thursday and wasted no time in heading to Sentosa Golf Club's Serapong Course to join his teammates for a training session.
Jonathan Woo, who is studying at the University of Oregon in Portland, is part of a Singapore's four-man golf team aiming for success on home greens at the SEA Games.
Marc Ong, Abdul Hadi Uda Thith, Johnson Poh and Woo will be busy today at Serapong as the men's individual and team competitions get underway. The women's events begin tomorrow.
While Woo has missed training and acclimatising to the tough Serapong layout with the rest of his team, he has been busy competing in the US National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regional and national events.
COMFORTABLE
"In terms of form, I feel fine. I've been in competition mode the last few weeks and it always feels comfortable playing golf at home," the 24-year-old first-year university student told The New Paper yesterday.
"I've known my teammates for a long time and they've been playing well recently too.
"I've played well at Serapong before, so we should be okay.
"Can we get the gold? Yeah, why not."
Ong, 20 and Poh, 24, seem to be hitting form at the right time. Ong clinched a wire-to-wire victory at the Malaysian Amateur Open Golf Championship in Sarawak last month.
He followed that up with a sixth-placed finish at the Saujana Amateur Championship in Kuala Lumpur last week, where Poh finished second.
Ong, Woo and Hadi were all members of the men's team that finished fourth at the 2013 SEA Games in Myanmar.
Defending champions Thailand are the hot favourites, but Ong said: "We're feeling confident, and we do have home advantage because we've been practising every day at Serapong."
