Total of 12 winners in TNP's Match & Score contest yesterday

His birthday is tomorrow, but Mr Wari Ismail has already received "the best birthday present".

Yesterday, the taxi driver, who will turn 58, walked away with $2,100, which he won in The New Paper's Match & Score contest.

Said Mr Wari: "It's the first time I've won anything in my life. And right before my birthday too."

Mr Wari was a double winner with the jersey cut-outs he had collected this week, claiming the jackpot of $2,000 and another $100 prize.

He realised he had won around 7pm, and was so excited that he rushed to collect his prize without eating immediately after breaking his fast.

Said his wife, Madam Roana Ali, 52, who accompanied him: "It's okay if we haven't eaten, we are too happy to eat now."Mr Wari said the money would go towards the expenses for the Hari Raya Puasa celebrations.

"I am so thankful to God for allowing me to win this money. My family will have the best Hari Raya this year," he said.

The TNP Match & Score contest saw a bumper crop of winners yesterday.

Apart from Mr Wari, there were 11 other winners - eight readers won $100 and three won $200.

Store handler Tan Meng Tong, 51, who won $100, bought seven copies of TNP every day this week.

He said: "It's my first time trying to compete in a TNP contest, and I cannot believe I won. It is so surprising."

For the contest, images of football jerseys are printed in TNP from Monday to Thursday, with the jerseys featuring a number or a country.

New printing technology allows every copy of TNP to include a different combination of jerseys.

These jerseys can then be collected to match the winning combinations published in TNP from Friday to Sunday. The jerseys are valid only for that week.

During these three days, there will be a daily jackpot prize of $1,000, which will snowball if it goes unclaimed for the day.

There will also be combinations for $100 and $200 cash prizes.

Up to $31,000 can be won from the contest, which lasts until July 10.

Winners must collect their prizes at the SPH News Centre, at 1000, Toa Payoh North, between 8pm and 9pm on the same day.
