#Fail: Armed thugs try to raid Man Utd star Angel di Maria's mansion but...

A gang of armed thugs reportedly tried to raid the home of Manchester United star Angel di Maria.

The attempted burglary took place hours after his team's 3-1 victory over Leicester City on Saturday (Jan 31).

According to Manchester Evening News, the Argentine winger was at home having dinner with his family when a gang of three smashed the patio doors of his Cheshire mansion in England.

Their weapon? Scaffolding poles.

The smash triggered a security alarm that sent the foolish gang fleeing empty-handed.

Star's family brought to hotel

An Old Trafford source said: "They stole some metal poles from a neighbouring property and broke some windows attempting to get in but ran off before being able to enter the property."

The £59.7million (S$121.9 million) man from Real Madrid is believed to be "shaken" by the incident.

His wife and baby daughter were reportedly escorted out of the house by United's security team and later brought to a hotel by police.

Police are investigating.
