Carrick to miss start of LVG era with ankle injury
Michael Carrick will miss the start of Louis van Gaal's reign as Manchester United manager due to an ankle injury.
It looked like the 32-year-old midfielder was set to play a part of van Gaal's plans when the Dutchman mentioned his name when asked about experienced players.
However, van Gaal, who was speaking to the media at his first press conference as United manager, also revealed that Carrick had suffered an injury and described it as a "big blow" and that he would be out for "a long time, too long".
United have now confirmed that the former Tottenham and West Ham midfielder has undergone surgery on his left ankle and will be out for 10 to 12 weeks.
While the injury places more urgency on chief executive Ed Woodward to strengthen United's midfield further, it opens the door for new signing Ander Herrera to start United's opening English Premier League fixture against Swansea on Aug 16.
