Delirium for Devils fans
Beer and cheers at Eleven's live screening at TNP Sports Bar
For the first 20 minutes, the only reaction from the fans had been gasps of panic when Leicester City came close to scoring.
One of the many Manchester United fans was even overheard wondering out loud if his team would be falling to a third straight defeat in the English Premier League.
Then two minutes later, Chris Smalling headed the Red Devils into the lead and, for the next hour or so, the only noise that filled the room were shouts of delight as Jose Mourinho's charges romped to an impressive 4-1 triumph over Leicester at Old Trafford on Saturday (Sept 24).
It was a happy outing for United supporters, who had showed up for the first live screening of a Premier League match by Eleven Sports Network at the Tiger-The New Paper Sports Bar at Shanghai Dolly in Clarke Quay.
Patrons received two free beers while the first 11 through the door also obtained exclusive goodie bags from Eleven Sports.
Not surprisingly, the majority of the fans who turned up were kitted in the red of United, but there was a palpable tension early on as the Foxes looked the likelier of the two teams to break the deadlock.
Smalling's opener in the 22nd minute, however, drew the first huge roar of the evening, with subsequent roars getting louder as further goals from Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba made it 4-0 before the break, before Demarai Gray grabbed a consolation for the visitors with a second-half stunner.
IMPRESSIVE DISPLAY
One of the fans who watched in glee was Ruslan Rusli Lim, who admitted that the impressive display by the Red Devils provided plenty of reasons to be optimistic for the remainder of the campaign.
"I thought United were excellent in the first half and slightly more subdued in the second but, overall, it was a good performance and an important three points," said the 28-year-old, who works in the aviation industry.
"If they play like this every match, I don't see why we can't be challenging for a place at the top of the table."
The event also gave supporters the chance to win Eleven Sports memorabilia by taking part in a half-time contest, which saw them attempt to pull off freestyle moves under the guidance of Singapore's own Urban Street Team.
"We are extremely delighted to partner The New Paper to bring the excitement of the Premier League to the readers and sports fans of TNP," said Joyee Biswas, the network's managing director.
"We look forward to more occasions such as these to increase the viewership of the Premier League across Singapore."
Another positive which got the United faithful smiling was the performance of world-record signing Pogba, who produced a dominant display following a slow start to his second spell at Old Trafford.
There was almost unanimous agreement that he had been the best player on the pitch, although Brandan Yip, 28, felt that an 18-year-old starlet stole the limelight from the Frenchman.
"I would say my Man of the Match would be Marcus Rashford," said Yip.
"Overall, the performance was quite good, but United's title prospects will largely depend on how Mourinho manages the team.
"I believe there's still more room for improvement."
