Ferguson: No one comes close to Messi and Ronaldo

For the past seven years, the World Footballer of the Year title has gone either to Lionel Messi (2009-2012) or Cristiano Ronaldo (2008, 2013 and 2014).

The duo have been miles ahead of the rest, and former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes that this trend will continue for the next few years at least.

He told SiriusXM FC Channel in an interview that Brazilian Neymar comes the closest to the duo, but the gap is still quite significant.

Said Ferguson: “I’m not sure if there’s one (ready to challenge Messi and Ronaldo) at the moment. The boy Neymar gets a lot of publicity about the potential he’s got, but I think that’s still to be seen, still to be fulfilled.”

Ronaldo’s boss, Carlo Ancelotti, who is under pressure at Real Madrid, also received praise from Ferguson.

He called the Italian “one of the best coaches” he has come across.

Said Ferguson: “These types of jobs are difficult, particularly if there are elections coming up... but I don’t think Carlo is under pressure. He probably is, because, as you know, of the dynamics of that kind of football club.

“But, for me, Carlo is one of the best coaches I’ve come across and one of my biggest opponents, so I wouldn’t worry about his future, that’s for sure.”
