His last wish? Watch his favourite club win
If you have one last wish before you die, what would it be?
For Belgian football fan Lorenzo Schoonbaert, it was to watch his favourite team Club Brugge play for one last time.
The 41-year-old delayed his euthanasia appointment to watch his beloved club beat local rivals Moeskroen 3-0 at the Jan Breydel Stadium on Sunday.
He was suffering from a terminal form of cancer and has had 37 operations in the last two decades. Euthanasia has been legal in Belgium since 2002.
“My greatest wish before dying is to see my team win again,” said Schoonbaert, who is affectionately known as Lorre, before the match.
He got to meet the players and walk on the pitch with his seven-year-old daughter as the Club Brugge faithful unfurled a banner reading “YNWA (You’ll Never Walk Alone) Lorre”.
Brugge’s Australian goalkeeper Mat Ryan said his meeting with Lorenzo after the game had left him “lost for words”, and labelled him an inspiration
After the match, Schoonbaert teared up and said: “I am unbelievably happy now. This will be a treasured memory for my daughter which she can enjoy all her life.
“My last dream has come true. I can die in peace now. I will celebrate from heaven.”
He ended his life via lethal injection on Monday
