Kazakhstan? I only know Borat, says Dutch defender
I'll admit - I don't know the names of any footballers from Kazakhstan. I couldn't name any of them even if my life depended on it.
But at least I'm not about to play in a Euro 2016 qualifier against them, unlike my namesake Gregory van der Wiel.
The Dutch fullback is part of the Holland squad set to face the Kazakhs at the PSV Stadium on Saturday morning.
While Guus Hiddink will be wanting the Oranje to get their first points on board in Group A following an opening 2-1 defeat to the Czech Republic, it seems that Paris Saint-Germain man van der Wiel's knowledge of the central Asian nation is limited to the movies.
'I only know Borat'
Speaking to PowNews, the 26-year-old said: "I only know Borat, I know he's from Kazakhstan. I think we'll win 4-0 on Friday."
In case you didn't catch the reference, Borat is a fictional character portrayed by British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen in the 2006 movie Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.
This is Borat. Great success! Photo: Fox
For Holland's sake, I hope van der Wiel was cracking a joke.
