LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling sues NBA for $1.25b
Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling isn't taking kindly to being kicked out of the league.
On Friday, he sued NBA for US$1 billion (S$1.25b), alleging breach of contract and anti-trust and civil rights violations.
Mr Sterling, who bought the Clippers in 1981 for US$12.5 million, was fined US$2.5 million and banned for life by the NBA over racist comments he made to his girlfriend.
He has argued that the NBA had no grounds to sanction him for racist conduct detrimental to the league because the racially-charged remarks came in a private conversation recorded without his permission.
The lawsuit has come at a time when Mr Sterling’s estranged wife Shelly Sterling, the sole trustee, has agreed to sell the LA Clippers to Mr Steve Ballmer for US$2 billion.
The sale is still pending the approval of the NBA Board of Governors.
