Saw brothers deliver gold in bowling doubles
They are brothers but have never competed together in a bowling doubles event.
Few would have bet on Howard,22, and Keith Saw, 20, winning the SEA Games gold medal in their first competitive outing as a pair.
But roared on by fans at the Orchid Country Club, the Singaporeans upset the odds in style to take gold on Wednesday (June 10).
With 2,653 pinfalls, they beat Indonesian silver medallists Ryan Lalisang and Billy Islam by 25 pins.
Malaysia's Johnathan Chan and Timmy Tan took bronze with 2,574 pinfalls.
Singapore's other pairs, Joel Tan and Justin Lim finished 11th (2,353) while Javier Tan and Muhd Jaris Goh placed 14th (2,331).
First gold
This is also the Republic's first gold in the event since Jack Wong and Tommy Wong won it at Jakarta in 1997.
Earlier in the day, Singapore failed to win a medal in the women's doubles event.
Malaysia took gold with Esther Cheah and Sin Li Jane's total of 2,651 pinfalls, which was 106 more than Indonesian silver medallists Sharon Santoso and Tannya Roumimper.
Another Malaysian pair Syaidatul Afifah and Shalin Zulkifli took bronze with 2,524 pinfalls to squeeze Singapore off the podium.
Jazreel Tan and Bernice Lim were fourth (2,473), women's singles champion Daphne Tan and New Hui Fen were seventh (2,410) and Cherie Tan and Shayna Ng finished eighth (2,370).
