Serena Williams wins WTA Finals, gets orchid named after her
US tennis player Serena Williams crushed Romania’s Simona Halep 6-3 6-0 on Sunday evening (Oct 26) to win the WTA Finals championship in Singapore.
Williams avenged her loss to Halep in the group stage of the season-ending tournament to claim her fifth WTA championship, tied for second with Steffi Graf.
Only Martina Navratilova, with eight titles, has won more.
Halep shocked Williams 6-0 6-2 in the group stage of the event but was unable to reproduce that performance in the final as the world number one dictated terms from the outset.
In addition to the over US$2 million (S$2.6 million) in prize money, Williams was presented with another, more intriguing honour - she had an orchid named after her.

It was announced last week that the orchid hybrid Dendrobium Pramat x Burana Charming (above) would be named after the winner of the WTA Finals.
Williams, 33, was presented with the flowers after her win by Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Mr Lawrence Wong.
It is the first time Singapore is naming an orchid after a sports personality.
