National defenders' future up in the air
The central defensive partnership of Daniel Bennett and Madhu Mohana was one of very few bright spots for Singapore as the Lions crashed out at the Suzuki Cup group stage last month.
But, the duo are now facing an uncertain club future, after their contracts with Geylang International and Warriors FC ran out respectively.
Bennett had impressed with his assurance and leadership in the backline at the Suzuki Cup, where Singapore were drawn in a tough Group A with Thailand, Indonesia and hosts the Philippines.
However, Geylang chairman Ben Teng told The New Paper that while he is keen to renew Bennett's contract, he said that the club are still unable to commit because S.League's funding and budget for the clubs are yet to be confirmed.
He said: "If the budget allows, we would want to keep Dan because he is one of those who has justified his salary.
"We still have 12 players on a two-year contract that we gave last season and, before the budget is announced, we are holding off signing any players for now.
"That said, I believe we can all see Dan's quality. He is a good player and I had a talk with him.
"We wanted to look for a player/manager role for him as he had indicated interest as an administrator after he retires from playing.
MEAN DEFENCE
"But, at the moment, he still wants to play and he's entitled to think so after the good performances he has put in for club and country this past year."
Bennett was part of an Eagles' defence which was the third-meanest in the S.League last season. They conceded 29 goals in 24 league games as they finished fifth out of nine teams.
His impressive club form saw the 39-year-old veteran force his way back into the national team this year after a three-year absence.
In fact, he is still one of the fittest players around, easily clearing the 2.4km test in eight minutes and 23 seconds.
Bennett, who is eager to play in his 19th S.League season, said: "I like Geylang International... I am not stressed like last year. What will be, will be."
Mohana, too, shone in the Suzuki Cup alongside Bennett, with his fierce tackling and long throws adding another dimension to the team's game.
The 25-year-old hopes he can find a club that match his ambition as he enters the prime years of his career.
Known to be cool under pressure, he was part of a Warriors side who finished seventh in the S.League.
He said: "I'm definitely looking for an opportunity to test myself in an overseas league.
"But, if that doesn't come through, I hope to find a good local club to help them achieve greater heights."
