Safuwan voted Man of the Match after scoring for Melbourne City, gets congratulated by Man City

On Friday, Safuwan Baharudin created history when he scored a 52nd-minute goal for Melbourne City against Adelaide United.

With that kick, the 23-year-old defender became the first Singaporean footballer to score in the A-League.

On Saturday, he was recognised for his performance – and voted as the club's Man of the Match, beating Australia-capped duo Josh Kennedy and Aaron Mooy.

Even English Premier League club Manchester City FC sent their congratulations (Man City and Melbourne City are owned by City Football Group).

The Football Association of Singapore also congratulated Safuwan on its Facebook page.

The praise was well deserved: Safuwan's goal rejuvenated his side, which was down one at half time.

Striker Kennedy and substitute Iain Ramsay went on to score a goal each, and the game ended 3-1 in City's favour.

Head coach John van't Schip said of Safuwan: "We're very happy with him, he can play in the midfield, he can play defence so we are happy to have him."
