Men's table tennis team loses again
The Singapore men's table tennis team are still without a win at the 2016 World Team Table Tennis Championships, after they lost 3-0 to Belarus in a Group C encounter on Tuesday (March 1).
Yang Zi, ranked 163rd in the world, was poor in the first singles, and lost to world No. 308 Aliaksandr Khanin 11-5, 11-9, 12-10 to give the Eastern Europeans the lead.
Pang Xue Jie, who beat Japanese world No. 14 Koki Niwa earlier in the week, then lost 11-8, 5-11, 10-12, 11-6, 11-9 to Pavel Platonov.
Clarence Chew had a golden opportunity to pull Singapore back into the tie in the third singles, but allowed Gleb Shamruk, ranked 412th in the world, to beat him 7-11, 11-5, 5-11, 11-8, 14-12, to secure the tie for Belarus.
Singapore are out of the reckoning for a top 12 finish with their results so far, and will finish their group stage campaign against Ukraine on Wednesday (March 2).
