Tennis player Rheeya to miss SEA Games due to exams
Singapore's tennis team were dealt a blow last week when it emerged that women's No. 2 Rheeya Doshi will miss the upcoming South-east Asia (SEA) Games.
The 19-year-old (above), who is studying at Northwestern University in Illinois, will miss the Games as she has not been granted a deferment from her examinations by the university.
The exams were scheduled for June 8 to 12, and according to team manager Quek Tun Lin, all but one of Rheeya's professors had granted her permission to sit for them upon returning from the Games. The tennis event will be held at the Kallang Tennis Centre from June 6 to 14.
Rheeya will be replaced by Sarah Pang, 30, who represented Singapore in the Federation Cup play-off last month. Speaking to The New Paper on Monday, Quek said: "Rheeya is very disappointed at missing this opportunity.
"It is unfortunate, but we are still going to try our best at the SEA Games."
Also on the women's team are Wee Khee Yen, Angeline Devanthiran and Singapore No. 1, Stefanie Tan.
The men's and women's teams started centralised training this week at the Kallang Tennis Centre.
