Zhou bags double in Singapore's four-gold harvest
Zhou Yihan wins singles and doubles titles in Republic's four-gold haul
She had to concede a walkover against the same opponent in the mixed doubles semi-finals on Sunday, because her partner was ill.
Yesterday, national paddler Zhou Yihan made up for the disappointment by beating Indian world No. 186 Mouma Das 4-1 (11-7, 11-5, 7-11, 11-2, 11-3) in the Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships women's singles final in Surat, India.
"I am happy with the results today," said the 21-year-old.
"The toughest part of the final was how to play to my own standard when my opponent was being aggressive in her play."
Zhou could not play against Mouma and Soumyajit Ghosh in the mixed doubles semi-finals on Sunday as her partner Li Hu was down with diarrhoea.
But she made up for it yesterday with wins in both her events - the women's singles and doubles.
First, she partnered Lin Ye to beat India's Manika Batra and Ankita Das 3-0 (11-6, 11-9, 11-9) in the women's doubles final.
Then she made the women's singles final with a 4-0 (11-5, 11-5, 11-5, 11-5) win over Manika in the last four, while world No. 57 Lin fell 4-3 (12-10,11- 9, 8-11, 1-11, 10-12, 11-8, 11-7) to Mouma in the other semi-final.
Asked if the manner of her semi-final win helped in the women's singles final performance, Zhou said: "I faced and beat my semi-final opponent during the team event, so it was easier for me.
BOOST
"The team event victory earlier in the tournament gave me a boost of confidence for the finals, but it was still up to me to do battle today."
Meanwhile, Singapore's Chen Feng won the men's singles title with a 4-2 (11-5, 11-5, 9-11, 6-11, 12-10, 11-7) victory over India's Amalraj Anthony on the last day of the competition yesterday.
The world No. 176 paddler had beaten India's Soumyajit, ranked 95th in the world, 4-3 (11-9, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9) in the semi-finals.
Chen, 21, said: "The semi-final win gave me confidence to go for the victory in the final, but I had to remind myself to calm down in the gold-medal match because my opponent would catch up each time I took the lead."
Singapore claimed four of seven titles at the championships, with hosts India clinching the men's team, men's doubles and mixed doubles crowns.
