Watch out, Spidey!

A great villain brings out the best in a hero. That's the point!

In the pantheon of supers, Spider-Man is blessed with some kick-butt baddies.

In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, opening here tomorrow, Spidey aka Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) faces off against three different crazies.

There's the super-charged Electro (Jamie Foxx), the diabolical Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan) and we're introduced to the Rhino (Paul Giamatti), who will have a bigger role in the next instalment. How do these guys compare to the maniacs who came before them? Let's break it down.

1 DOCTOR OCTOPUS/ OTTO OCTAVIUS

ALFRED MOLINA IN SPIDER-MAN 2 (2004)

ORIGIN: Brock, Parker's rival at work, bonds with a gooey alien symbiote that transforms him into Venom.

PERFORMANCE: Grace is smarmy, but maybe that's just the character.

BEST SCENE: Venom defeated by sound.

2 ELECTRO/MAX DILLON

JAMIE FOXX IN THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 (2014)

ORIGIN: When the mechanical arms he uses in his research become fused to his body, the brilliant scientist Octavius transforms into the demented Doc Ock.

PERFORMANCE: Molina brings humour and humanity to the nerdy scientist, and kicks butt as a powerhouse villain in shades and trench coat.

HIGHLIGHT: Oc attacks the doctors trying to help him - truly horrific.

3 GREEN GOBLIN/NORMAN OSBORN

WILLEM DAFOE IN SPIDER-MAN (2002)

ORIGIN: Osborn adopts his father's Goblin persona and sets out for revenge against his killer - best friend Parker.

PERFORMANCE: Franco is very emo and not at all formidable.

BEST SCENE: Osborn saves Spidey.

4 GREEN GOBLIN/HARRY OSBORN

DANE DEHAAN IN THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 (2014)

ORIGIN: Near death, this old friend of Peter Parker injects himself with mutated spider-venom, mutating himself.

PERFORMANCE: Pretty but weird, DeHaan is wicked by default.

BEST SCENE: Battle in the clock tower.

5 VENOM/ EDDIE BROCK JR

TOPHER GRACE IN SPIDER-MAN 3 (2007)

ORIGIN: Missing an arm, Oscorp scientist Connors uses lizard DNA to regenerate it, but turns into a lizard-man.

PERFORMANCE: Ifans seems sallow and lackadaisical, not menacing.

BEST SCENE: The school fight.

6 THE LIZARD/ DR CURT CONNORS

RHYS IFANS IN THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (2012)

ORIGIN: Petty criminal Marko stumbles into a pit of sand at a research facility and transforms into the Sandman!

PERFORMANCE: Church isn't charismatic at all, and is overwhelmed by the special effects.

BEST SCENE: Spidey forgives Sandy.

7 THE SANDMAN/ FLINT MARKO

THOMAS HAYDEN CHURCH IN SPIDER-MAN 3 (2007)

ORIGIN: The CEO of Oscorp, Osborn tests out the company's experimental strength enhancer, transforming himself into the cray-cray Green Goblin.

PERFORMANCE: Dafoe doesn't need make-up to look like a goblin! His raspy voice helps too.

BEST SCENE: When Osborn talks to the Goblin -himself - in a mirror.

8 NEW GOBLIN/HARRY OSBORN

JAMES FRANCO IN SPIDER-MAN 3 (2007)

ORIGIN: The painfully shy engineer Dillon works at Oscorp, where he gets electrocuted and then bitten by electric eels, transforming him into Electro.

PERFORMANCE: Foxx goes super-deep into Dillon, relishing the chance to show a good man corrupted by power.

BEST SCENE: In Times Square, Electro feels out his newfound skills.
