Gigi Ascending
Our resident Kiss92DJ/journo pays tribute to Zayn Malik's model girlfriend and music video muse Gigi Hadid
Gigi Hadid is having a good week.
Her boyfriend's debut solo record just hit the top of the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart.
For a pop star's girlfriend, this is the ultimate achievement.
Congratulations, Gigi.
The boyfriend in question is Zayn Malik, formerly of UK boy band One Direction.
He was the first to jump the 1D ship, and also the first to release a solo record. Smart kid.
The album is called Mind Of Mine, and it is in fact the very first debut album by a British male artist to reach Billboard's pinnacle in its first week of release.
Sorry Elton John, George Michael, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Sting and Peter Gabriel.
You guys just suck.
SMASH HIT
Pillowtalk, the lead single from Mind Of Mine, was a smash hit, and helped pave the way for the album's success.
The sexy music video for Pillowtalk has become a sensation, with 304 million views on YouTube.
It features Malik and Hadid smooching, and there's arty special effects.
This isn't the first video that Hadid has appeared in along with one of her pop star beaus.
A little over a year ago, she was dating Cody Simpson, and popped up in his clip for Surfboard.
Unfortunately, Surfboard never managed to hit Billboard's top spot.
In fact, it failed to chart in the US.
Clearly, Simpson was not living up to Hadid's lofty standards. She split from the young Aussie and hooked up with Joe Jonas last summer. Now, here was a good bet.
The US singer already had crazy success with his family band, the Jonas Brothers, and his new group DNCE is smokin'.
Hadid ended up directing the video for DNCE's first single Cake By The Ocean, and she did well.
Sadly, the single failed to hit the top spot in the US, peaking at No. 9.
Hadid moved on - and up - yet again, trying her luck with Malik in late 2015.
The rest is history.
She has worked herself onto the A-list of pop star-model couples.
Hadid and Malik now take their place in music history along with Christie Brinkley and Billy Joel, Heidi Klum and Seal, and of course Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo.
Living the dream. And also the cliche.
