Audition tips from New Face 2017 alumnae
Put your best foot forward at the audition for this year's New Face contest
It is that time of the year when The New Paper New Face takes its first step to finding the 2018 winner.
The local modelling competition's audition takes place tomorrow at Subaru Leng Kee, with the walk-in registration starting at 8.30am and registration for pre-selected contestants beginning at 9.15am.
The closed-door audition will begin at 10am, after which 20 semi-finalists will be selected for a photo shoot held at Singapore Press Holdings on Sunday.
This year's finalists will also have an opportunity to be shortlisted for Star Fashion's Look of the Year contest in October next year. Visit the New Face Instagram page for details.
The New Paper New Face 2018 finale will be held on Nov 15 at the Bugis+ Atrium.
We check in with New Face 2017 alumnae, who will be attending the audition, for tips on how to put your best face forward.
PACE YOURSELF
"Find your rhythm. Some people tend to walk fast, but the judges won't be able to see your face, so walk at a moderate pace.
"Also smile with teeth, even if you have crooked teeth. Embrace it.
"Show the judges who you are and be confident. Have faith that you can do it."
- Kiki Lim, 16, who was in the recent Huayi Brothers Fashion Group 2018 Icon Search
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
"Get a pair of heels you are comfortable walking in and practise introducing yourself in the mirror, because if you are too nervous, you might stutter.
"The most important thing is to breathe in and out before you go on stage."
- Saranya Chyenne, 20, who works with local influencer marketing company Faves Social on sponsorships
SPECIAL MENTIONS
"Mention your special skill or talent. Be your natural self and be confident about it, as that will stand out the most.
"The most important value is to stay true to yourself and be genuine, as character counts and makes the biggest difference."
- Naomi Huth, 18, who won the Project M Model Search 2018
THE EYES HAVE IT
"Eye contact during your catwalk is important - you should never look down.
"Look straight ahead at the cameras or pick a spot on the wall in front of you so that you won't get distracted by anything. When you reach the end of the runway, pause, then pose with lots of attitude."
- Juhi Nar Singh, 20, a freelance model
KNOW YOUR STUFF
"Dress to lengthen your body - the taller you look, the better. Be well versed in fashion, so if the judges ask about your favourite models and brands, you would know what to say.
"Be kind and friendly to everyone because after all, all of you are going through the same process."
- Laranya Kumar, 18, who is signed to NOW Model Management
ACT IT OUT
"I don't focus on thoughts about myself as that can turn negative quickly.
"Create a persona and think of yourself as a celebrity, and how they walk with poise and confidence.
"If you want to stand out, you have to take on that character to bring out those attributes."
- Mohanaprabha, 23, who is signed to Upfront Models and was a Miss Universe Singapore 2018 finalist
POSTURE MATTERS
"During the closed-door audition, contestants rarely get to speak. So you should wow the judges with your body language. Stand tall and do not slouch.
"Get plenty of rest the day before, drink lots of water and be nice to everyone."
- Soh Qiao Ying , 23, who was a Miss Universe Singapore 2018 finalist
