PAP's Jalan Besar announcement starts with toast
They are an experienced team with close to 60 years of service between them.
On Sunday (Aug 16), the People's Action Party unveiled a team of veterans to contest in the revived Jalan Besar GRC, which had made way for Kallang-Moulmein GRC, for the upcoming general election.
The line-up is led Minister for Communications and Information Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, 59.
Also on the team is Senior Minister of State in Prime Minister’s Office Mr Heng Chee How, 54; Deputy chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) for Social and Family Development Dr Lily Neo, 62 and Mayor of Central Singapore District Ms Denise Phua, 55.
The four MPs were part of the five-member team which contested for Jalan Besar GRC in 2006.
The other member of that team was Dr Lee Boon Yang who retired from politics in 2011.
Before the announcement, all four MPs mingled with the public at a grassroots event at Kallang Bahru where they helped prepare and serve breakfast items including kaya toast, eggs and coffee.
During the announcement, Dr Yaacob and his team also unveiled a five-year masterplan for the GRC, with about 200 slated improvements costing $20 million.
These include covered walkways, playgrounds and fitness corners. The plan also includes 17 amphitheatres and eight community gardens.
