Glass panels from condo pool fall 5 storeys
The glass walls of a swimming pool on the fifth storey of a condominium at Lorong Limau, off Balestier Road, suddenly gave way yesterday afternoon, sending glass panels and thousands of litres of water crashing to the ground.
Fortunately, no one was in the pool at the time. There were also no vehicles in the section of the outdoor carpark where the glass panels landed and shattered into tiny pieces.
The condo, Cradels @ Whampoa, which was developed by Melrose Land, has been occupied for about a year and a half.
SURPRISED
"I was surprised that something like this could have happened," a witness, who wanted to be known only as Mr Thomas, told The New Paper.
He was drinking coffee at a nearby coffee shop when the incident occurred at around 2.20pm.
The 56-year-old said he saw the glass panels giving way before falling to the ground. Pool water then gushed down like a waterfall.
Mr Mohamad Noor, a cleaner who works in the area, said he heard a sound that was as "loud as thunder".
The 65-year-old said in Malay: "I heard a loud 'boom', so I rushed over and saw the glass panels fall one at a time."
Residents living nearby did not think anything out of the ordinary had happened when they heard loud noises.
Mr Gay Ying Soon, a 78-year-old retiree, did not even leave his flat to check what the sounds were.
He told TNP: "I thought it was just trucks delivering goods. The road here is always busy."
Mr Mike Fook, 68, thought the noises came from nearby construction sites.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it was alerted to the incident at 2.32pm. No injuries were reported.
The condominium's building management said it could not comment as investigations into the incident are ongoing. When contacted, Melrose Land also declined comment.
