HDB unit catches fire, family pet dead
A fire broke out in a ninth-storey HDB unit at Block 633, Veerasamy Road yesterday afternoon.
No injuries were reported, but 40 residents in neighbouring units were evacuated.
The home owners were not home when the fire started.
The New Paper understands that the owner's pet dog died in the fire.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was notified at about 4pm and sent a fire engine, two Red Rhinos, two fire bikes, an ambulance and two support vehicles.
SCDF officers entered through the unit's front door and put out the blaze in the three-room flat using a water jet.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Meanwhile, three people were taken to hospital yesterday after a shipping container on a berthed ship at Pasir Panjang Terminal caught fire just after 6pm.
The SCDF dispatched two fire engines, two Red Rhinos, two fire bikes, two ambulances, nine support vehicles and a marine fire-fighting vessel.
On arrival, SCDF personnel found PSA's in-house emergency response team on board the vessel. A water jet was being used to disperse smoke coming from the container.
SCDF vehicles continued to remain at the terminal as a precautionary measure.
