Three suspected terrorists were arrested in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday (Sept 24) in connection with a "supposed terror threat" in Jalan Alor, a Malaysian official said.

The three – a Malaysian, a Syrian and an Indonesian – were picked up by the Bukit Aman Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division.

Hours prior to the arrests, the United States Embassy and Australian High Commission had issued travel advisories on their websites advising their citizens to avoid Jalan Alor and the surrounding areas.

The US Embassy stated that their advisory was based on credible information regarding a potential terrorist act.

Jalan Alor is a popular food street in Bukit Bintang, the capital's shopping and entertainment district.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Noor Rashid Ibrahim said the police acted fast in detaining the suspects after the terror alert was issued.

Vital information

"We are investigating the involvement of the suspects in a supposed terror threat in Jalan Alor," he said when contacted on Friday (Sept 25).

Mr Noor Rashid said Bukit Aman had cooperated with its counterparts from others countries to obtain vital information which led to the arrests of the trio.

"We are on top of things. We will never let any attack occur in Malaysia," he said.

In a separate statement later in the day, Mr Noor Rashid said one of the suspects had made frequent trips to Yemen and had entered Malaysia a few days ago.

"The travel advisories issued by a few foreign embassies are designed to ensure the safety of their citizens.

"We are in the midst of verifying whether the trio had planned to launch any attack in Malaysia," he said.
