How do the blind watch movies?

No, that's not a rhetorical question.

In the first episode of a new web series from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, blind moviegoers discuss the movie-watching experience. 

They highlight favourite movies and characters - the Harry Potter series, Gollum from Lord of the Rings - as ones that can be enjoyed purely with their sense of hearing. 

"Gollum ... just his voice, I could tell how he was acting or how he would look like," says Melissa Hudson, who runs the blog blindgirl.net.

"I listen to the story, the acting, the characters, how well it's written ... the sound, the music, all that other stuff, and it's the same experience without the picture," adds Tommy Edison (above), who runs blindfilmcritic.com.

The web series will explore "everything from the creative process, to the moments that changed the course of film-making, to the artists who are charting its future".
