Singapore student Choo Pei Ling  has been awarded a prestigious prize by a UK university to help establish a clinic in Myanmar.

Miss Choo, a PhD Student in Neurological Rehabilitation, has been awarded a Magnus Magnusson Award by Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), the university said in a statement.

It will allow her to use her physiotherapy skills to help set up a rural satellite neurorehabilitation clinic in Myanmar.

The clinic is an extension of the only rehabilitation hospital in the entire country.

Miss Pei Ling is GCU’s Student of the Year. Last week, she was named the UK’s National Union of Students’ International Student of the Year.

She said: “The project will make a significant and positive impact to the lives of those with disabilities in Myanmar.

Rare opportunity

“This once-in a-lifetime opportunity to work within a developing country will enable me to advance both professionally and personally as a clinician-scientist.”

She is one of 13 students and early careers researchers who were also presented with Magnus Magnusson Awards.

They are presented annually in honour of the late Magnus Magnusson, former Chancellor and ambassador of the University.
