Team S'pore rocked by Asian Games withdrawals
Two Team Singapore athletes have been forced to withdraw from the Asian Games just two days before the Asiad's opening ceremony on Friday.
A statement from the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) announced that the two athletes were shooter Hoong Shixiang and judo exponent Ang Xuan Yi.
Hoong had already travelled to Incheon with some of his several shooters when he was taken ill with appendicitis and underwent a successful appendectomy on Monday.
While he is said to be recovering well the Gachon University Gil Hospital, the 22-year-old's condition means he will be unable to compete in the men's 10m air pistol and men's 50m free pistol events.
Hoong is scheduled to return to Singapore on Saturday with his mother, who flew to Incheon on learning of her son's condition.
As for Ang, SNOC revealed that the judoka had sustained a high ankle sprain with a complete tear of a major ligament ahead of the judo contingent's departure from Singapore yesterday and will not travel to South Korea.
The 2011 South-east Asian Games bronze medallist was set to compete in the women's under-57kg category.
The Asian Games closing ceremony will be held on Oct 4.
