JLo wows with hot dress, hot dance at American Music Awards
Forget standard award show staples like controversies, backstage surprise hook-ups and shocking wins.
The focus of this year's American Music Awards, which took place yesterday morning (Singapore time) at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles, featured a competition of a different sort.
Viewers were treated to stage theatrics and elaborate sets from artists who seemed intent on one-upping each other. We rank the superstar performances...
1 CANDLELIT DINNER FROM HELL WITH TAYLOR SWIFT
Grand chandeliers, a swish formal dinner setting and a sharp-suited charmer.
That was one lucky guy on a picture-perfect date with Swift as she opened the ceremony with her hit Blank Space.
Except she then fed him a poison apple and he collapsed. Swift later set a red rose petal on fire in the palm of her hand.
Can anyone say "psycho girlfriend from hell"?
When Swift called herself a "nightmare dressed like a daydream" in the song, she was not joking.
2 BUS RIDE WITH FERGIE
There is no better way to launch a comeback than on top of a colourful bus.
But that wasn't the only reason why Fergie's performance of new track L.A. Love (La La) was so memorable.
She suffered a mini wardrobe malfunction when she struggled to remove her robe, which ended up dangling embarrassingly from her bum.
3 JUNGLE GYM WITH IGGY AZALEA
Azalea snuck in some exercise with her leotard-clad dancers for Beg For It. They hung from bars, did some pull-ups and then push-ups on the ground.
Even on stage, she makes them work!
4 POLE DANCING CLASS WITH JENNIFER LOPEZ AND IGGY AZALEA
The duo made full use of dramatic lighting, silhouettes and miniscule leotards to deliver an ultra-sexy performance of Booty.
The saucy act closed the night but for some disappointed fans, it did not measure up to the racy music video.
Industry insiders apparently told TMZ that they were forbidden from risque moves like flashing their butt cracks and excessive grinding, which are aplenty in the video.
5 FIELD TRIP WITH ONE DIRECTION
It was only apt that the UK boy band chose a night-time setting for their single Night Changes.
Standing amid a grassy field, One Direction belted the song with a faux moon as a backdrop.
The group was the show's big winner, bagging three awards - Artist of the Year, Favourite Pop/Rock Band, Duo or Group and Favourite Pop/Rock Album.
Thumbs down for their hairstyles though. What's with Zayn Malik's and Louis Tomlinson's odd poufs?
