An off-service SMRT bendy bus, a van and a lorry were involved in an accident at the junction of Yishun Avenue 1 and Yishun Avenue 2 yesterday afternoon.

Both the bus and van mounted the road divider.

The body of the crashed bus also blocked off four of the six lanes on Yishun Avenue 2, bringing traffic to a crawl.

Madam Andora Tan, 45, was on another bus when she noticed the accident.

The sales coordinator said: "My first reaction was to wonder how the bus managed to get into that weird position.

"It looked like the accident occurred less than a minute before we passed the scene, but my bus managed to get out of the jam in just a few minutes."

Police said they received a call about the accident at 4.07pm. The Singapore Civil Defence Force sent one ambulance to the scene.

The van driver, a man in his 40s, was taken conscious to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) after experiencing numbness in his left arm. His passenger, a woman in her 40s, was also taken conscious to the hospital for swelling on the right side of her head.

SMRT's vice-president of corporate information and communications Patrick Nathan said: "We are in touch with those involved in the accident and are rendering assistance as best we can. We are investigating the accident."
