Girl, 4, will perform ukelele at SG50 Jubilee Big Walk
Four-year-old ukulele player to perform at SG50 Jubilee Big Walk
You are never too young to perform in public.
Aged just four, Ilyssa Chua is the youngest member of the People's Association (PA) PAssionArts Ukulele Network.
The ukulele is a natural instrument for the toddler to pick up - all her family members, including her four siblings aged six to 10, play it.
Her father, project manager Mikky Chua, 39, said: "We wanted Ilyssa to try playing the ukulele like her siblings, so that she would not feel left out."
In November, Ilyssa will be joining her family and other members of the PA PAssionArts Ukulele Network to perform for participants of the Jubilee Big Walk.
For the Chua family, the ukulele is a way of life.
It started when the whole family went for a ukulele event at Sentosa last year.
The first three Chua siblings saw ukuleles on sale and pestered their father to buy one for each of them.
For about a year, the ukuleles were left untouched until the PA launched a ukulele class for residents in Tampines.
Mr Chua signed up his children, Inessa, 10, Isaiah, nine, Izabel, eight, and Immanuel, six, for lessons every Saturday.
Illysa joined her siblings about two months ago.
"As she's very young, her fingers are still not very flexible yet," said Mr Chua.
"But she's been having fun and she's not complaining, so that's good."
When asked which songs she could play, the cherubic Ilyssa immediately named children's lullaby 'You Are My Sunshine'.
Ilyssa most recently performed alongside her siblings at the POSB Passion Run for Kids event on Sept 13.
Now she is looking forward to her next big gig - playing for thousands of walkers at the Jubilee Big Walk.
Her proud mother, housewife Jas Chua, 39, said: "As long as she has fun, I want to expose her to many art-related activities so that she can find her interest next time."
