Feng eyes top four at World Cup
Singapore women's table tennis star Feng Tianwei was whitewashed 4-0 by Japan's Ai Fukuhara in the Rio Olympics quarter-finals in August, ending her quest for a medal in a third consecutive Games.
The 30-year-old, ranked sixth in the world now, is hoping to do better this weekend in the women's World Cup in Philadelphia.
"I hope to make it to the top four, even though I've been doing just recovery training for the past week," Feng told The New Paperon Monday(Oct 3).
"I was out in the first round last year, so I hope to fare better this time, just like I did in the Asian Cup."
Feng finished third in the Asian Cup this year in Dubai - China's Liu Shiwen and Li Xiaoxia were first and second, respectively - and qualified for the invitation-only World Cup based on that result.
She has been on a break since the Olympics, and resumed training only last week.
"I have spent most of my time off nursing my injuries, including injections for my knee," said Feng, who left for the United States this morning.
She will be Singapore's only representative at the prestigious tournament, after Yu Mengyu's withdrawal.
China's world No. 2 Liu, the defending champion, is the highest ranked player in the 20-strong field, which also features Tie Yana (Hong Kong), Mima Ito (Japan) and Yang Haeun (South Korea).
Feng's teammate Yu was originally slated to compete in the US as well, but has withdrawn from the tournament due to a back injury.
