Expansion of programme to encourage post secondary studies

Singaporeans who use their Post-Secondary Education Account (PSEA) to finance their courses can look forward to more options next year.

The PSEA, which was set up to encourage Singaporeans to pursue post-secondary studies, will be expanded to include modular and short courses.

This will support learners who are looking to develop specific skills, without the need to sign up for a course leading to a full qualification. Courses covered by the expansion include those offered by tertiary institutions, public agencies and private training providers.

Education Minister (Higher Education and Skills) Ong Ye Kung said yesterday that it reflects the diverse options in skills training.

This is a crucial shift as Singaporeans will learn in spurts as lifelong learning becomes the norm, he said in an event at the Enabling Village in Lengkok Bahru.

The expansion will also include non-Ministry of Education-subsidised Continuing Education and Training full qualification programmes offered by the five polytechnics and Institute of Technical Education.

For persons with disabilities, the PSEA will also be expanded to include approved training courses offered under SG Enable from February.

Mr Ong said many children and young people with special needs will in time have to pick up skills in order to gain employment, independence and contribute to society. - THE STRAITS TIMES
