Aguero the best foreigner in EPL history: Shearer

The English Premier League's all-time record goalscorer Alan Shearer (260 goals) believes Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero is the best foreign player to ever play in the EPL.

The Argentinian is now just two behind the Newcastle United legend's record of 11 league hat-tricks after bagging a treble in a 6-1 hammering of Huddersfield Town last weekend.

Aguero is the second-highest foreign goalscorer in Premier League history on 146 goals, 29 behind Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.

But the 30-year-old's goal-per-game ratio is better than the Frenchman and Shearer.

The former England striker told The Sun: "Sergio Aguero is now on nine Premier League hat-tricks and only two behind me.

"The best foreign player to ever play in the Premier League.

"A great centre forward with no weaknesses."

However, Shearer's former England teammate David Seaman disagreed, saying Henry's influence on the pitch surpasses Aguero's.

He told talkSPORT of his former Arsenal teammate: "Who is the best? You've got players like Ruud van Nistelrooy, Eric Cantona, Cristiano Ronaldo, Patrick Vieira, Luis Suarez, Xabi Alonso, Sergio Aguero…

"But when you look at the influence they had on the Premier League, I would look no further than Thierry.

"For me, he influenced games not just in the attacking third, but all over the pitch."

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, meanwhile, picked out David Silva for his consistent excellence in his eight years in the English top flight for City.

He told Sky Sports: "He never seems to come into the reckoning for it but consistently, over an eight-year period, there has been nobody above him.

"With Silva, it feels like you get the same performance almost every game.

"So you notice it more when he doesn't play well than when he does because his performance levels are so consistently high.

"When I talk about him being Player of the Year, I am thinking of it in terms of his service to Manchester City and the Premier League. It would be brilliant if he could pick something up like that, not just for him but for football, because he has been a special player.

"I think when he is finished we will be talking about one of the all-time great Premier League players."
