Singapore bags three golds at WorldSkills Asean 2018
In a test of skill and precision, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) student proved herself the best in the region, bringing glory to Singapore.
Miss Lim Hui Fang, 18, a second-year student at ITE College East, returned home yesterday with a gold medal around her neck to cheers at Changi Airport.
She beat 12 others from seven countries in the beauty therapy category at the WorldSkills Asean competition, which was held in Bangkok from Aug 30 to Sept 4.
Speaking to The New Paper upon arrival, Miss Lim said she was honoured to represent Singapore in the category, which involved providing spa treatments and nail art.
"I was not used to the environment and had difficulty communicating with the Thai models," she said.
"But I made do using hand gestures and still enjoyed myself."
Miss Lim was also awarded the Best of Nation award for attaining the highest final grading score among the Singaporean competitors across all categories.
Singapore sent its largest contingent to the competition this year with 40 young people.
It is the first time Singapore has sent students from the polytechnics.
There were a total of 331 competitors from 10 countries competing across 26 skill categories, which included cooking and electronics.
OTHER MEDALS
Along with Miss Lim's gold, Team Singapore clinched two other gold medals in mechatronics and graphic design technology - a first for the country.
The team also won three silver medals, three bronze medals and seven medallions for excellence in other skill areas.
Mr Ng Cher Pong, chairman of the WorldSkills Singapore Council and chief executive of SkillsFuture Singapore, said: "For all of them, this is the start of their skills development journey and we hope that this competition will spur them to scale greater heights."
