Shaw vows to work on fitness after LVG criticism
Luke Shaw has agreed with Louis van Gaal's assessment of his fitness.
The former Southampton full-back, who became football's most expensive teenager following his £27 million ($56.8m) transfer, has been training on his own to boost his fitness levels to match what is required by the Manchester United boss.
Van Gaal had said earlier that Shaw was not fit enough to perform in his new 3-5-2 system.
Apart from agreeing with the Dutchman's criticism, the 19-year-old defender also admitted that he did not expect the step up to join the 20-time English league champions would be as demanding.
When asked about van Gaal's comments after United's penalty shootout win over Inter Milan, Shaw said: "Obviously I have seen that, and it's something I totally agree with.
"To play in this formation you have to be really fit. I am fit but I am not at the high level he demands.
"I have got to get fitter to get up and down (the wing). It's something I have got to work on."
Keeping it up
While Patrice Evra's departure to Juventus has all but gifted him the left-back spot with the Red Devils, Shaw has vowed to keep on working hard to get his fitness right in time for the new season.
He said: "I didn't come into United thinking it would be much harder. That's something that I think I made a mistake on.
"I thought it was just going to be the same but it's the biggest club in the world and there is world-class players in training.
"I wasn't meant to play (against Inter) so I trained on Tuesday morning...but I came on and played 45 minutes. I felt great. I could have played another 45 so that's something that shows there is a progression there after the last game."
He said the focus is now to get fitter and fitter and to be flying by the start of season.
