Tennis: US Open champs to get record $3.7M each
It's ka-ching for the men’s and women’s champions at this year’s US Open.
They can each receive US$3 million (S$3.73 million) from a record US$38.3 million (S$47.6 million) total purse, the United States Tennis Association announced on Wednesday.
It's the largest payout for singles champions in the tournament history, with an almost 12 percent increase over last year.
Organizers also increased the payout for winners of each round of the singles competition.
Prize money to hit US$50 million
In the last three years, the prize money is up by 64 percent.
Dave Haggerty, USTA chairman of the board, said prize money will reach US$50 million by 2017. “This year’s prize money increase continues the commitment to make the US Open one of the most lucrative purses in all of sports.”
The 2014 US Open is scheduled for August 25 through September 8.
