Movie Review: The Finest Hours (PG)
Chris Pine plays captain once again, but this is no space odyssey.
Here, he drops his cocky Captain Kirk persona for unassuming US Coast Guardsman Bernie Webber, who in 1952 piloted his little rescue boat out to sea in a blizzard in an attempt to save crew members of an oil tanker that had been broken in half.
The journey is fraught with many trials.
Even after rescuing the survivors, the trip back to shore is a treacherous affair.
It seems too fictional to be true, but the epilogue says the events are all real.
While Webber's heroic efforts deserve to be immortalised on the big screen, director Craig Gillespie's heavy focus on the CGI storm washes out anything memorable from Pine or Casey Affleck's Ray Sybert, the loner first assistant engineer.
Verdict: 2/5
