Nutella: Unhealthy but we still love it
Our favourite hazelnut chocolate spread is celebrating its 50th birthday this year and there's no shortage of fans from around the world.
But, researchers have said the healthy image Nutella has portrayed is false in every way possible and that people shouldn't eat so much of it.
Here are some interesting facts (good and bad) you may not know about the delicious spread :
- A jar is sold every 2.5 seconds globally.
- The company produces enough Nutella each year that could circle the world 1.4 times in Nutella spread.
- Stacked up, the jars would build 22,000 Big Bens in London.
- There are so many jars of Nutella made each year that they would line the banks of the Danube river 24 times. That river flows through 10 countries.
- 56.7 per cent of Nutella is pure sugar, while 30 per cent is fat.
- The level of sugar, cocoa and fat content in Nutella is almost identical to normal chocolate. Even with hazelnuts, there's not much nutritional value.
- Peanut butter has more protein, less unhealthy fat and more vitamins. Jam and honey have up to 60 to 70 per cent of pure sugar but not that much fats. So eating Nutella is like having honey and peanut butter together.
- There are 100 calories in one tablespoon. That'll take you 30 minutes to walk and burn if off.
- Nutella is sales' make up a fifth of Ferrero’s annual $13.06 billion (£6.5 billion) turnover.
- 89-year-old owner, Michele Ferrero, is worth $30.15 billion (£15 billion) making him the 21st richest man in the world.
- Ferrero has opened Nutella Cafes in Chicago and New York selling pastries and treats featuring the spread.
It may be sweet, unhealthy and terrible for your teeth and waistline, but we don't forsee it becoming any less popular.
