Celebrity Chow with ONE FM 91.3 DJ Elliott Danker
A feast for champions at DC Cafe
Just as Harley Quinn and the Joker stole the spotlight in supervillain movie Suicide Squad with their eccentricities and zany antics, a set of F&B offerings named after these two characters made the biggest impression on local radio DJ Elliott Danker.
M was at DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands with the 34-year-old self-confessed comic book fan to try the restaurant's Suicide Squad-themed menu, available till Aug 30.
Danker, who is part of ONE FM's #1 Breakfast Show team, said the Harley Quinn: Laugh This Off, Puddin' (a giant chicken burger) and the Joker's Rainbow Freak Shake (a dizzyingly colourful vanilla concoction) take the cake when it comes to matching the movie's "unpredictability".
Suicide Squad is currently showing here.
"The Harley Quinn burger is totally wacky, unique and out of this world," said Danker.
"I had anticipated the taste of the burger's chicken patty, egg, tomato and lettuce, but I certainly didn't expect the sugary effect from the buns. They're like donuts."
Gesturing to the Joker shake, Danker added: "Right here is THE most sinful drink in the world.
"It has jelly beans, gummy bears and whipped cream. If you're looking for a sugar high, it doesn't get more high than this. It's an excuse to let go and have fun."
Harley Quinn: Laugh This Off, Puddin'In your opinion, Harley Quinn: Laugh This Off, Puddin' outdid Katana Cut Chicken Miso (roasted spring boneless chicken). But is the latter, inspired by Suicide Squad's swordswoman Katana, any good?
It's actually very nice too. Chicken is my absolute favourite meat. This is a safe dish, you can never go wrong with chicken. I like how it's creamy on the inside. Plus, it's really easy to eat.
Katana Cut Chicken MisoAre the other beverages - Katana Rose Latte, Harley Quinn Lil' Monster Mint, and Funny Vanilli Misah J! - yummy too?
I like the Katana Rose Latte a lot. It's a lovely, relaxing drink for the afternoon.
I'm a coffee addict and I need to function with coffee. There is a tinge of jasmine or lavender in it. I don't know, I'm feeling quite female with this drink. (Laughs)
Funny Vanilli Mistah J! (left) and Katana Rose Latte (right)What's your most memorable food encounter?
Right now, it would have to be my January trip to South Korea.
One of the dishes I had there was Budae Jjigae (army stew), which is hotpot with instant noodles, luncheon meat, small sausages and bacon. I was told it's poor man's food, you just put everything together with kimchi flavouring. It's such a simple dish, but it tastes so good during winter. We had it every other night.
Do you cook? Anything that you can whip up really well?
Yes, I cook. I do a chicken fusion dish pretty well. It's grilled chicken breast where I wrap a prune around it, lace it with mushroom sauce, then put it in the oven. It's kind of like the Harley Quinn burger, it messes with your senses. You take a bite of my chicken dish and you'd taste sweetness from the prune.
The DJS at ONE FM slug it out every week with their favourite culinary discoveries in M's ONE FM Food Fight makan column. Is it very competitive?
When Desiree Lai was on ONE FM (she has since moved to our sister station Kiss92), she was winning every other week. So when anyone else wins, it's like "Yay, we knocked Desiree off her throne".
Once, (ONE FM DJ) Shan (Wee) even called TNP while he was on air to ask, "How does Desiree keep winning?"
Personally, I'm not great at discovering new eateries. I won't know where to start. I depend a lot on my friends' recommendations and food bloggers. It'd be nice to start winning more often, but I won't want Shan to call TNP again. (Laughs)
