Interstellar tops list for the most pirated movie in 2015

With all the copyright police being so much more stringent the past couple of years, you would've thought that piracy statisics would have improved.

Interestingly enough, the piracy industry this year actually boomed compared with 2014.

According to piracy tracking firm Exicipio, as reported by Variety, the 2013 movie Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo Dicaprio, was the most downloaded movie in 2014, drawing over 30 million downloads.

However, that number is only slightly more than 60 per cent of the number of this year's top lister, the 2014 movie Interstellar, which had almost 47 million illegal downloads.

Trailing close behind was the highly anticipated Furious 7 with nearly 45 million downloads, followed by Avengers: Age of Ultron and Jurassic World.

According to Variety, Excipio didn't change the way it monitored piracy this year, and that the tracking period is roughly the same, ending around Dec 25.

The popular Star Wars franchise's recent movie release, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, did not make the list because pirated copies of the movie did not appear on bit torrent sites until several days after its release which was nearing the end of the tracking period, according to Movieweb.
