Movie Review: Jem And The Holograms (PG)
If you enjoyed the 80s animated series this film is based on, be warned that it is nothing like its source material.
Instead of a confident girl group churning out delicious pop hits, what we have are insecure teens playing generic Katy Perry-ish music.
Shy girl Jerrica (Aubrey Peeples) leads Jem And The Holograms with her sisters Kimber (Stefanie Scott), Shana (Aurora Perrineau) and Aja (Hayley Kiyoko).
Their dreams of fame come true when they are discovered by major label Starlight Music, but evil CEO Erica Raymond (Juliette Lewis) threatens to blow up their lives.
The movie is a watered-down version of the original cartoon.
Its "follow your dreams" shtick and low-budget feel are annoying, but it is not much worse than your average chick flick.
Expect coloured hair and bejewelled outfits, and not much more.
